Spirit of Sacrifice, Canadian memorial Vimy, World War 1

The Spirit of Sacrifice

Part of the gigantic Canadian Memorial at Vimy, in Northern France. Canadian sculptor Walter Allward created the memorial on a scale; it was then carved by French stonecarvers. The stone, ironically, came from a quarry near Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, where in 1914 the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife had precipitated the outbreak of the First World War.
