Cooking For Soldiers

A Belgian woman is cooking for the soldiers during a pause in the fighting

The picture is made on the banks of the river Yser, in Western Flanders, Belgium. I am not sure whether this is a genuine handcoloured photograph, or a painting.

This situation however was real. Some women who cooked and took care of Belgian soldiers on the front became famous: Mrs Favarger, better known as Mother Tack, Mieke Deboeuf, Elsie Knocker and (British-born) Mary Chisholm.
