Washing Day in Reims

The First World War is usually remembered through images of ruined cities, artillery positions and soldiers standing in muddy trenches. Yet much of a soldier’s time was occupied by ordinary routines: eating, repairing clothing, cleaning equipment, shaving and finding an opportunity to wash.

Hygiene Behind the Front

Regular washing was difficult near the front line. Water supplies were limited, bathing facilities were often improvised, and soldiers could spend days or weeks without properly changing or cleaning their clothes. Whenever units were moved to reserve positions, men attempted to wash themselves, remove mud from their uniforms and deal with lice.

These routines were not simply about appearance. Personal hygiene helped reduce skin problems, infections and some of the discomfort caused by prolonged service in damp and crowded conditions. Washing also offered a brief return to normality in an environment dominated by military discipline and uncertainty.

Reims During the War

Reims stood close to the Western Front and became one of the French cities most closely associated with wartime destruction. Images of the city and its surroundings document both the visible damage caused by the conflict and the continuation of daily life around military positions.

Unlike formal portraits or battlefield photographs, scenes such as this one show the practical side of wartime experience. They remind us that the history of the Great War was also made up of small, repetitive tasks performed between periods of danger.
